P A R S O N S O N
description
We were asked to substantially alter and add to the existing large arts and crafts house, including adding extra garaging and a guesthouse. The original house faced predominantly north and east, and purchase of the neighbouring property to the west allowed us to relate to the new area of land and the sun and views in this direction.
The new kitchen sits at the heart of the house, and at the same time receives the morning sun and opens out to the new terrace and views to the northwest. There is now a clear flow through from east to west. The site has fabulous views and sun but is very exposed to the northwesterly winds. The extensions and new buildings are laid out in a way that integrates with the site, around usable outside spaces.
Even though this is a large house the built parts of the project become broken up, framed and softened by the planted areas. This combined with the building language matching the existing house creates a result that is subtle and appropriate to the scale and style of houses in the area.
